TITLE: Fitchburg Public Market Store Associate 

STATUS: Non-Exempt

DESCRIPTION:

Designed to bolster a robust regional food system, the Worcester Regional Food Hub’s mission is to increase local food access and consumption and recruit, retain, and incubate local food entrepreneurs, collectively building healthy, sustainable, and just communities.

The Fitchburg Public Market is a part of the Worcester Regional Food Hub. It is located at 35 Main Street in Fitchburg, and features a commercial kitchen, restaurant stalls, and a grocery that sells locally produced foods. 

The Store Associate is a part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position that reports to the Fitchburg Public Market Manager.  The primary responsibility of the Store Associate is to operate the grocery store inside the Fitchburg Public Market as clerk and cashier, as well as maintain the cleanliness and safety of the operation. This position is responsible for customer service, financial duties, receiving, and inventory activities. In addition, this position assists with cleaning, sanitizing and setup responsibilities for the entire Market, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and grocery.

Responsibilities:

Customer Service:

  • Greet customers warmly as they enter and leave the store.

  • Assist customers with their purchases, providing information and answering queries.

  • Handle customer complaints and concerns in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Answer customer phone calls.

Financial Duties:

  • Operate the cash register efficiently and accurately. Process payments through cash, credit/debit cards, and other payment methods.

  • Balance the cash register at the beginning and end of each shift, and send in a daily log to the company Slack channel. 

Store and Market Maintenance:

  • Keep the checkout area clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., bags, receipt paper).

  • Receive, unpack, and stock merchandise on shelves and in storage areas for both wholesale and retail operations. 

  • Rotate stock to ensure freshness and minimize waste. 

  • Help with price changes and markdowns as directed by management.

  • Maintain inventory levels and report shortages or discrepancies to management.

  • Ensure that the kitchens, bathrooms, and market spaces are cleaned and organized properly after use and at the end of each day, in accordance with previously developed SOP’s, and that all equipment is kept in good working order

Compliance and Safety:

  • Follow all store policies and procedures, including those related to safety and security. Use store equipment such as pallet jacks and box cutters safely and responsibly.

  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, including proper food handling practices.


Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a retail or customer service environment is a plus. Grocery experience is desirable.

  • Basic math skills and ability to handle transactions accurately.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Bilingual candidates are especially encouraged to apply. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Flexible schedule, including availability on weekends and holidays. Some weeknight and Saturday shifts are required.
